Promila Mahonto, 70: I found my real home here!

Place of Origin: Siliguri, West Bengal

Living in Vrindavan since: 8 Years with Shyama Didi

At the age of 40, Promila Maa’s marriage broke, when she found that her husband, an army officer was not faithful to her. Betrayed by her husband, Promila Maa started a small garment unit to economically support herself and three children, one daughter aged 15, two sons of 8 and 2 years age. Soon, she found demand for her garments in Nepal and moved to Kathmandu, where she started her own retail outlet and made enough money to support her family. After, she got her daughter married and sons grew up and got settled, she started feeling lonely and came to Vrindavan with a resolve to spend rest of her life in peace and devotion to god without any family responsibilities and related emotional challenges.

Soon, she found Shyama Didi’s ashram and decided to live at the Ashram. Currently, Promila Maa helps Shyama Didi in managing the ashram and with staff management. She also leads the group chanting (Kirtan) and teach yoga to other Matas. She single handed stitches clothes for all other Matas. She has been able to resolve conflicts amongst the Matas and help in maintaining harmonious relationship in the Ashram.

Promila Mata says that “I am glad that I found a home of my own at Shyama Maa’s Ashram, I feel that I am able to live a life without any blame and shames of family settings. I always lived for others, now I am living for my own self and would like to spend rest of my life in Vrindavan.”

She further says that “currently, Shyama Maa has to spend a lot of money on rent and maintenance of the ashram building, and that too its over crowed without any room for comfortable living. I wish, we will be able to move to a bigger premises of our own. I urge all the devotees and well-wishers to make their contributions towards buying land and constructing our own ashram building.
